DP WORLD TOUR | Porsche Singapore Classic

Titleist Brand Ambassador  Richard Mansell  closed out his maiden DPWT title with authority, birdieing the last to post 16 under and secure a one-stroke victory. Playing a setup that included his  Pro V1 golf ball, TSi3 driver, T100 and 620 MB irons, Vokey SM10 wedges  and  Scotty Cameron Phantom putter, the 29-year-old Englishman turned in rounds of 68-66-66 around Laguna National Golf Resort Club for the weather-shortened 54-hole event.

Mansell’s game was dialled in from start to finish, ranking 2nd in Strokes Gained: Tee to Green (+13.88). Over four of those strokes came from his play off the tee (+4.04, 9th) and over six from his approach play (+6.64, 7th). He also led the field in greens in regulation (85%) and scrambling (7/8, 88%).

MANSELL ON HIS PRO V1 GOLF BALL:

“I like the way it feels and the way it gives me so much control. The guys know what they are doing and that’s what they tell me to use so I use it.

“I really like to feel the golf ball and feel like I can spin it the way I want to and really have that control around the greens.

“But I’m not a massively technical person when it comes to my equipment, I put my trust in the guys to tell me what’s going to work best for me because they really know what they are doing.”

ON WORKING WITH THE TITLEIST TEAM:

“It’s hands down the best team that we’ve got out here. It’s that attention to detail to find those 1% gains. The equipment obviously speaks for itself but having the bigger team out here really helps, we get everything we need and we don’t need to wait for it.

“For the first time in a long time I feel really settled with my whole equipment set-up. When I re-signed with Titleist Liam McDougall just said we were going to go back to my old set-up with driver because it was working really well. I know the new product is great but my driving stats had always been great so it was nice to go back to that familiar set-up. The guys are just doing everything they can to make sure the equipment is performing.”

ON HIS T100 IRONS:

“I did some work with Anthony Williams and the change we made going from CBs to T100 in the 4 and 5 iron was massive.

“We got a higher launch which was great and really helped when going into the par-5s and I don’t really seem to mishit them so the overall numbers and consistency is much better.

“And then going into the shorter irons we went for a bit of a groove change at the start of the year and it has given me a bit more spin especially when playing out of the rough.

ON A RECENT PUTTER CHANGE:

“I actually put a new putter in play for the first time this week and it worked really well.

“I’ve done a lot of work with Henry Byrne and Mike Madden at The Barn and they’ve had to be pretty patient with me to be honest. I’ve tried every brand and every headshape and they’ve been banging on about the importance of having some consistency.

“Spending some time at The Barn was great because we’ve got more time than on the practice green at an event, you’ve got all the cameras there to really see what is going on. You get to see everything in detail and then come away with that confidence you’ve got the right putter.

“It was a putter I got fitted into with Henry in a chrome version and I took it home to practice and really liked it. But they came out with a black model for me and I liked the look of it even more.

“I reflected on it and it reminded me of when I was choosing a putter as a kid – it’s really important to get something you really like the look of – something that you really want to putt with. I had tried some other brands and to be honest I hated looking down on it. The data is important but ultimately you need to like the look of it to have that confidence. It all worked out really well for me this week.”

PGA TOUR | Valspar Championship

Viktor Hovland  went flag-hunting with his  Pro V1 golf ball Sunday to capture his seventh PGA TOUR victory, making three birdies over his final five holes – including the first two holes (16 and 17) of Innisbrook’s infamous “Snake Pit” – to secure the one-shot win.

On one of the PGA TOUR’s toughest closing holes – the par-4 16th – Hovland stuck his 185-yard approach to 5 feet, 9 inches. He followed with another clutch swing on the 222-yard par-3 17th, his Pro V1 finishing just under 12 feet from the cup to set up back-to-back birdies.

Over the weekend at Innisbrook, Hovland’s average proximity to the hole was 25 feet, 8 inches, while gaining over four (+4.379) shots on the field on approach. For the week, he gained over six shots tee to green (+6.268/11th).

Hovland was among the 75 percent of the field who teed up a Titleist golf ball in Tampa, including five of the top-7 finishers – including  Justin Thomas (Pro V1x/2nd)  and  Bud Cauley (Pro V1/4th), who matched Sunday's best rounds with 66’s.

HOVLAND ON HIS PRO V1 GOLF BALL

– “It’s not a fluke that Titleist is the #1 ball. It’s been #1 for so long, I don’t think that’s a coincidence. Knowing that I have the best product when I go out there and play, that gives me confidence. I don’t have to wonder or think that I’m playing a ball that’s sub-optimal, or I’m giving shots away before I’ve even started the round. So I think that’s a nice thing to have with you.”

– “I like the Pro V1 because the ball flight tends to be a little bit more penetrating. It doesn't spin as much as the Pro V1x. What it does for me into the wind particularly, I can still launch it fairly high, but it's not overspinning. It's actually flying through the wind pretty penetrating, so on really firm greens, I can launch it up in the air and still not lose all my distance into the wind.”

– “The spin is very important. If I’m hitting a full 9 iron, I want the 9 iron to spin around 8,800 to 9,000 rpms. You need to hit a good shot, but if the spin’s not right, it’s not going to go the distance you need it to. I’ve always played the ball and love it, so, there’s no reason to change.”

– “[Pro V1] gives me a lot of consistency around the greens. I like how it feels off the face. I like how I'm able to spin the ball around the greens, but I don't sacrifice anything to the full shots. When I hit a drive on a par five and I'm trying to get after it, I don't have to worry about the spin creeping up too high. I can still hit a high launch with low spin – and then if I miss the green in two, I can still hit a short-sided shot with a lot of spin.

– “So I think just the versatility is the key with the Pro V1 ball for me, and especially in the wind because we do play in a lot of wind. And I think that's kind of the biggest challenge. If you don't have a good ball in the wind, it really plays a big difference. And so I think just the consistency in the wind, knowing how much it's going to curve in certain wind directions and stuff like that – it plays really well for me.”

VALSPAR CHAMP WINS WITH U•505 DRIVING IRON

The winner of the Valspar Championship gamed a  U•505 3-iron (Graphite Design Tour AD DI-85 Hybrid X) in winning his seventh PGA TOUR title. He used his 3-iron for the daunting tee shot on the par-4 16th, the first hole of the Snake Pit. His 264-yard tee ball to the right side of the fairway kickstarted his birdie-birdie run on Nos. 16 and 17, which saw him pull ahead with the tournament’s final lead change of the day.
