CARLSBAD, Calif. (May 15, 2024) – The new Vokey Design WedgeWorks L Grind – a tour-proven low bounce lob wedge offered in 58- and 60-degree lofts, both with 4 degrees of bounce – is now available through Vokey WedgeWorks.

Eight of the top-10 players in the Official World Golf Ranking currently play a Vokey Design lob wedge. Seven of those players are using a lob wedge with 6 degrees of bounce or less, seeking added versatility around the greens and performance on firm conditions.

The L Grind is a common choice for players who want a low bounce option with heel, toe, and trailing edge relief. Its leading edge sits close to the ground and works well on tight or firm lies, in a square or open position. Compared to other low bounce options in the Vokey lineup, the L Grind offers slightly more protection from excessive digging.

“The L Grind is for the player looking for the versatility of a low bounce wedge,” said Aaron Dill, Vokey Tour Representative. “It's really the perfect balance of ‘I want versatility, but I also want a little forgiveness to go with it.’ The forward bounce on the L helps reduce dig, but players are still able to open it up and slide under the ball easily. It's a great option for players looking for a little bit less bounce.”

The new WedgeWorks L Grind is now available in 58-degree and 60-degree lofts (RH) and a Raw finish. (60-degrees only for LH model.)

L GRIND ON TOUR

At the inception of all Vokey Design wedge grinds is the collaboration of Master Craftsman Bob Vokey and Vokey Tour Rep Aaron Dill with the best wedge players in the world. The result is a matrix of grinds designed to service every type of player.

So far in 2024, Vokey Design wedges account for more than half of all gap, sand and lob wedges played on the PGA TOUR.

Among those players currently using the L Grind week-in and week-out: Brian Harman, Max Homa, Sungjae Im, Emily K. Pedersen, J.T. Poston, Albane Valenzuela, Cameron Davis, Lee Hodges, Frida Kinhult and Michael Kim

INSIDE MAX HOMA’S MOVE TO THE L GRIND

In 2019, Max Homa went to Aaron Dill to reevaluate his lob wedge setup. Homa, who had previously been playing a 60.08M lob wedge, was struggling with contact on his chip shots. He believed that he needed more bounce to address the issue. Dill thought the opposite, suggesting that Homa try a 60.04L.

“He came to me, and he said, ‘Hey, I feel like my bottom’s a little off,’” said Dill. “And he was thinking, ‘I need to increase the bounce to find my strike, feel a little more comfort, get a little more forgiveness out of this club.’ Reality was he had to go the other direction. He needed to go with less bounce because his club path was [delivering the sole into the turf] too early. So we switched him from M to L, and that cleaned up the delivery and he got to the ball a little bit faster with less resistance. That brought the launch down, increased the spin.”

The results were immediate: Homa earned his first PGA TOUR win that week at the Wells Fargo Championship.

“This wedge has never left me since then,” said Homa. “I started being able to hit the low-flight, high-spin golf shot that you see all the really great chippers hit. And yeah, it's not the way I thought about doing it. Had I gone into a ton of bounce, I was never going to hit that shot. I was going to hit a lot of okay shots and not a lot of good shots. And I started to hit a lot of good shots.”

The L Grind has been in the bag for each of Homa’s six PGA TOUR wins.

SM10 TECHNOLOGY

  • High and forward centre of gravity progression – The CG is moved up and forward for SM10 lofts of 54-62 degrees, which provides lower trajectory and a squarer face at impact. The higher CG provides lower trajectory with more spin and greenside control, and moving the CG forward enables the face to square more easily at impact, resulting in a tighter dispersion.
  • Patented spin milled process for maximum spin – Every SM10 groove is cut to the edge to maximise spin. Each Vokey wedge is 100% inspected for utmost quality and performance.
