LPGA | U.S. Women’s Open

Allisen Corpuz  (Pro V1) earned her place in history with a ball-striking week for the books, shooting a final round 3-under 69 to clinch her first major championship at the first U.S. Women’s Open held at Pebble Beach.

It also marked the first LPGA title for the 25-year-old Corpuz, who was the only player to post under-par rounds (69-70-71-69) on all four days at Pebble. She led the field with 17 birdies for the week, including six on Sunday, finishing the week at 9 under par for a comfortable three-shot victory.

Starting the day one shot back of the lead, Corpuz opened the final round with a birdie at No. 1. She added birdies at 3, 7 and 10 before separating herself from the chasing pack with back-to-back birdies on the par-5 14th and the par-4 15th.

In complete control of her golf ball, Corpuz led the field in average proximity to the hole on approach shots (28’1”) and ranked 2nd in Strokes Gained: Approach (+2.7). The Hawaii-native also finished T3 in Greens in Regulation (65%) and T2 in Scrambling, getting her Pro V1 up-and-down 18 out of 25 attempts.

“This is really a dream come true. It was something I had dreamed of, but at the same time kind of just never really expected it to happen,” she said.

Corpuz has now finished T15 or better in all three majors this season (T4, The Chevron Championship; T15, KPMG Women’s PGA Championship).

FOOTJOY AND TITLEIST BOTH #1 AT U.S. WOMEN’S OPEN

At the first United States Women’s Open hosted at historic Pebble Beach, it was a great week for both FootJoy and Titleist brands. FootJoy once again dominated the Shoe and Glove count, with more players trusting in FJ than any other brand at the event. This included the winner of the event  Allisen Corpuz who opted to wear the StaSof glove and Premiere Series BOA golf shoes on her way to victory. It was also a great week for Titleist with 105 players choosing to tee up a Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball, more than six times the nearest competitor. That included champion  Corpuz (Pro V1) as well as LPGA rookie  Bailey Tardy (Pro V1), who posted rounds of 69-68-75-73 to finish at 3 under and record a T4 finish, a career-best result on the LPGA Tour.

LUDVIG ABERG’S HOT START CONTINUES

Ludvig Aberg  (NEW PRO V1x) closed with a bogey-free 8-under 63 at TPC Deere Run to earn the best finish of a PGA TOUR career (T4) that is just four events old. Aberg’s Sunday 63 was the lowest of his first 16 professional rounds on the PGA TOUR since earning his card through the 2023 PGA TOUR University Ranking.

The 23-year-old Swede has played his first four pro starts in 49 under par, including five rounds of 65 or better, while finishing no worse than T40th. Aberg also made the cut in his two PGA TOUR starts earlier this season while playing at Texas Tech.

ABERG ON HIS 2023 PRO V1x:

– “The Titleist golf ball is the best golf ball there is. I’ve used it for a very long time and it's something I trust and it’s something that I really enjoy using. I just love the feel around the greens, putting, chipping. I love the softer feel and it flights the way that I want to. So I have a lot of trust in it and, and that’s why I play it.”

– “I like to put spin on the ball. I like to hit it a little bit higher, to have a little bit of a different angle coming into the firmer greens that we play here on the PGA TOUR. So I think the Pro V1x helps me with that and it helps me to be able to compete against the best players in the world.”

– “What you want when you’re chipping is that little extra feeling of checking up on the green and making sure that when the greens get a little firmer and faster, you're still able to put that spin on it, which I feel like the Pro V1x allows me to do. Chipping and short game is such feel-based – what you like to feel, what you don't like to feel – and this (ball) allows me to have that creative mindset.”

– “As a golfer and as a competitor, you always look for the perfect shot and the perfect execution, and it’s not always going to show up that way. But at least this golf ball allows you to have that consistency and that way I know exactly what it’s going to do when it reacts on the green, when it reacts in the air. And this (ball) allows me to have my spin rate in a very consistent level, which allows me to score a bit better as well.”

SARGENT THREE POINTS AWAY FROM EARNING PGA TOUR CARD

Titleist Brand Ambassador  Gordon Sargent turned in rounds of 70-67-69-71 this week at TPC Deere Run, making the cut to earn his 17th point in the PGA TOUR University’s Accelerated program points scale. The rising Vanderbilt junior, who needs to earn 20 points by the end of his third year of NCAA eligibility to secure his PGA TOUR card, has earned four other points so far in 2023 for his appearances at the Masters and the U.S. Open, his made cut at the U.S. Open and his appearance in the Palmer Cup. Sargent also earned five points for achieving the No. 1 ranking in the World Amateur Golf Ranking.

Since 2010, only three players would have secured their card by reaching the 20-point threshold:  Patrick CantlayJustin Thomas  and  Patrick Rodgers.
