CARLSBAD, Calif. (Nov. 5, 2024) – The Vokey Design WedgeWorks K* lob wedge, a popular grind on Tour with some of the game’s best players, is now available for the first time through WedgeWorks. The grind is ideal for the player with a neutral to shallow attack angle who plays on a variety of turf conditions.
Like all Vokey Design grinds, K* is a product of the collaboration between Master Craftsman Bob Vokey, Vokey Tour Representative Aaron Dill and the best players in the world. The K* Grind originated from player requests to modify the sole of the popular Low Bounce K Grind lob wedge. Instead of the full, smooth sole of the K Grind, the sole of the K* Grind features a steeper pre-wear on the leading edge along with heel, toe and trailing edge relief.
The steeper pre-wear on K* adds forgiveness from the square-faced position, with a narrow ribbon of added bounce along the leading edge helping to resist excessive digging. In an open-faced position, the heel, toe and trailing edge relief on K* allows the leading edge to sit closer to the ground, adding greenside versatility by helping the player slide under the ball easier. And like all K Grind variations, K* has a wide sole that excels out of the bunker.
Performance across a variety of playing positions and turf conditions is one reason why K* is in the bags of players such as Justin Thomas, Cameron Young and Ludvig Åberg, as well as the 2014 Champion Golfer of the Year.
The new WedgeWorks K* Grind is available now in 58- and 60-degree lofts and a Raw finish on Vokey.com.
Every new Vokey Design grind begins with a conversation between the Vokey team and a player. For K*, that first conversation was between Vokey Tour Rep Aaron Dill and Titleist Brand Ambassador Webb Simpson.
“Webb was not one to make many changes to his wedges,” said Dill. “As conditions shifted on tour and we introduced different soles in our line, Webb was motivated to test additional grind options that could offer some forgiveness. This led to Webb in 2015 testing a 60 K Grind, and while this was a great wedge, it still was missing a key element important to him: versatility from tighter lies. Webb and I worked on the sole, adding relief, testing different bounce angles, and ultimately landing on most of the modifications we see today in the K*.”
As time went on, and more of the best players in the world began testing the grind, Dill continued to perfect the sole modifications. Justin Thomas was another player whose feedback was instrumental in helping to identify the specific angles and changes to the original K Grind’s sole, resulting in the finished K* Grind today.
The K* is trusted by many players across the worldwide professional tours. It is the go-to lob wedge for Cameron Young, who had both a 58- and a 60-degree (@ 62) K* wedge in the bag for his Saturday 59 at the Travelers Championship this summer, and the 2014 Champion Golfer of the Year, who used a 58K* lob wedge in winning twice this year on the PGA TOUR. Ludvig Åberg carries a 60K* as an option week-to-week, having switched into it from his higher-bounce V Grind for the first time this year to adjust for the firmer conditions of the Scottish Open and the Open Championship. Justin Thomas also travels with a 60K* every week, which he alternates with his 60.04T lob wedge.
Vokey Design wedges account for more than half of all gap, sand and lob wedges played on the PGA TOUR this year. They have been used to win five of the last six men’s major championships, including the 2023 U.S. Open and Open Championship as well as the 2024 Masters, PGA Championship and Open Championship, and players trusting Vokey Design wedges won 25 events over the recently concluded 2024 PGA TOUR FedExCup season.
- High and forward center of gravity progression – The CG is moved up and forward for SM10 lofts of 54-62 degrees, which provides lower trajectory and a squarer face at impact. The higher CG provides lower trajectory with more spin and greenside control, and moving the CG forward enables the face to square more easily at impact, resulting in a tighter dispersion.
- Patented spin milled process for maximum spin – Every SM10 groove is cut to the edge to maximize spin. Each Vokey wedge is 100% inspected for utmost quality and performance.
Vokey Design SM10 wedges feature a modern, clean look, which provides a canvas for customization. The WedgeWorks custom options include:
- Stamping options | 10-character Straight/Freestyle stamping; 15 characters around the toe; and two lines of 10 characters each
- SM10 wedges can also be custom ordered with an industry-leading selection of shafts, grips, shaft bands and ferrules. For a complete list of options, visit www.Vokey.com.
