CARLSBAD, Calif. (Sept. 18, 2024) – The Vokey Design V Grind, a lob wedge that offers players increased bounce on square-faced shots with enhanced relief for open-faced shots, is now available through WedgeWorks on Vokey.com.
V Grind, a go-to lob wedge for Tour players such as Ludvig Åberg and Billy Horschel, features high measured bounce forward on the sole, which works to prevent excessive digging. However, when the face of V Grind is opened, its heel, toe and trailing edge sole relief allows the leading edge to stay closer to the ground, providing exceptional versatility. The grind is ideal for players with a steeper angle of attack playing in normal to soft conditions.
V Grind is offered in 58- and 60-degree lofts with a Raw finish. Both models feature 10 degrees of bounce.
– “When you look at how a V grind is constructed, we have a front or a forward bounce section. This is a really steep bounce angle, and then we have this grind in the back, allowing you to have some versatility as well.”
– “V Grind players are often a little steeper in their deliveries. They have a little more shaft lean which means they’re delofting and taking some bounce away. The V Grind also really suits them in softer conditions, or if they’re playing on courses with grainy turf. That’s where the forward bounce comes into play.”
Billy Horschel, a longtime V Grind loyalist, prefers a lob wedge setup that offers sufficient forward bounce without sacrificing greenside playability.
“I've got the V grind. I love this grind,” said Horschel. “When I hit full shots, there's enough bounce there that it doesn't slide underneath the ball. The bounce saves me and the ball, you want to hit it in a certain spot. It's hitting right up in the second or third or fourth groove when you're hitting full shots. And then out of bunkers and hitting flop shots, because of the relief on the backside as well, it opens up and I can really slide underneath.”
Before settling on the V Grind as his go-to, Horschel tested and played with other lob wedge grinds, including the 60.04T. He found that the V was the best fit for his technique, as narrower and lower-bounce options promoted contact high on the face. The higher bounce of the V Grind allowed him to make contact lower on the face, delivering consistent flight, spin and, ultimately, better distance control.
“As much as our technique is consistent, certain weeks how we enter and deliver the club is a little bit different. And so, what I found with the T is sometimes the ball will just ride up a little bit high, come out with not nearly as much spin. With the V, it just gave me that ability where I could, when I hit down, the bounce sort of engages a little bit more, [the ball] came out lower.”
One of Master Craftsman Bob Vokey’s three keys to great wedge play is a lower, more controlled flight. Proper contact, between grooves two through five, is key to achieving a lower ball flight with maximum spin, and the right grind helps players achieve proper contact.
Horschel trusted his 60V, bent to 62 degrees, to victory at the 2024 Corales Puntacana Championship, as well as a runner-up finish at the 152nd Open Championship.
Like all Vokey Design wedge grinds, V Grind is a product of the collaboration between Bob Vokey and his team with the best wedge players in the world. Each grind adds to a matrix of wedges designed to service every type of player.
Vokey Design wedges have been used to win five of the last six men’s major championships, including the 2023 U.S. Open and Open Championship as well as the 2024 Masters, PGA Championship and Open Championship. They account for more than half of all gap, sand and lob wedges played on the PGA TOUR this year, and players trusting Vokey Design wedges won 25 events over the recently concluded 2024 PGA TOUR FedExCup season.
- High and forward center of gravity progression – The CG is moved up and forward for SM10 lofts of 54-62 degrees, which provides lower trajectory and a squarer face at impact. The higher CG provides lower trajectory with more spin and greenside control, and moving the CG forward enables the face to square more easily at impact, resulting in a tighter dispersion.
- Patented Spin Milled process for maximum spin – Every SM10 groove is cut to the edge to maximize spin. Each Vokey wedge is 100% inspected for utmost quality and performance.
Vokey Design SM10 wedges feature a modern, clean look, which provides a canvas for customization. The WedgeWorks custom options include:
- Stamping options | 10-character Straight/Freestyle stamping; 15 characters around the toe; and two lines of 10 characters each
