Titleist Tour Report: 01.28.24

PGA TOUR | Farmers Insurance Open

Playing a Pro V1 golf ball, Matthieu Pavon claimed his first PGA TOUR victory with a clutch birdie on the par-5 18th at Torrey Pines’ South Course.

From a difficult lie in the left rough, 147 yards to the water-guarded green, the 31-year-old Frenchman stuck his Pro V1 to 7 feet, 8 inches. He rolled in the birdie putt to post a closing 3-under 69 and win by one shot.

“That ball came out like a butterfly and it really feed the slope on the green and left myself a nine-footer or something. That was the right time to prove I have the guts to finish that tournament and I did it soI'm so happy about that last hole,” he said.

Over the 72 holes, Pavon gained more than five strokes on approach shots (+5.398/3rd) and got up and down 15 times (71%/8th) while making a total of 21 birdies (3rd).

This week marked Pavon’s 11th career PGA TOUR start and just his third as a PGA TOUR member. He finished eighth in last year’s Race to Dubai Rankings on the DP World Tour to earn his PGA TOUR card.

WHY PAVON PLAYS PRO V1

A longtime Titleist golf ball player, Mattieu Pavon says his game is best suited for the flatter, mid flight trajectory he gets with Pro V1, as compared to the higher-flying Pro V1x. He says Pro V1 generates the perfect amount of spin off the driver, he loves his ability to control trajectory and flight shots, and he describes it as “powerful” into the wind. He also prefers the softer feel of Pro V1 on shots around the green. “This is the one that suits me the best,” he said.

FOUR IN A ROW FOR PRO V1 & PRO V1x PLAYERS TO START 2024

Titleist golf ball players have now won each of the first four events to start the 2024 PGA TOUR season:

• The Sentry: Pro V1x player

• Sony Open: Grayson Murray (Pro V1)

• The American Express: Pro V1 player

• Farmers Insurance Open: Matthieu Pavon (Pro V1)

Over the last four weeks on the PGA TOUR, a total of 361 players have teed up a Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball, more than five times the nearest competitor (63).

On Sunday, Pavon topped a leaderboard that featured Titleist golf ball players in four of the top 5 positions and six of the top 8:

1. Matthieu Pavon (Pro V1)

T3. Nate Lashley (Pro V1x)

T3. Jake Knapp (Pro V1 Left Dot)

T3. Stephan Jaeger (Pro V1)

T6. Beau Hossler (Pro V1x)

T6. Tony Finau (Pro V1 Left Dot)

KORN FERRY TOUR | The Bahamas Great Abaco Classic

Titleist Brand Ambassador Aldrich Potgieter, 19, became the youngest champion in Korn Ferry Tour history, closing with a 7-under 65 to for a two-shot victory this week at the Bahamas Great Abaco Classic. Potgieter trusted his Pro V1x golf ball and full bag of Titleist equipment to make seven birdies and an eagle during Wednesday’s final round.

Windy conditions at The Abaco Club proved difficult for scoring, and Potgieter managed his game to finish as the only player to post double digits under par (10 under) for the week.

“I wouldn't say I'm used to the wind, but I guess I’ve played a lot in the wind and I’ve got some experience down,” said Potgieter. “I think just a bit conservative, but you have to be aggressive. It’s a bit of both combination. You kind of have to take all of that in and take the best option you’ve got and still be aggressive because you still need birdies to be able to win the event.”

Potgieter’s win makes it two in a row for Titleist golf ball players to start the 2024 Korn Ferry Tour season.
