Titleist Presents: "Searching for Spin | The Story Behind Titleist RCT Golf Balls"

An inside look at the conception, development and creation of Titleist’s Radar Capture Technology

Searching For Spin | The Story Behind Titleist RCT Golf Balls

FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (July 24, 2024) — Titleist, the #1 ball in golf, presents “Searching for Spin | The Story Behind Titleist RCT Golf Balls.” The short film showcases Titleist’s golf ball R&D team and the process of creating Titleist Radar Capture Technology, a unique breakthrough in golf ball technology that allows for accurate and reliable indoor golf shot data.

Constant innovation is the driving force behind the creation of all new Titleist golf balls and equipment. With Titleist RCT, the drive to create was tied to a common problem facing golfers. Indoor golf was growing at a rapid pace, but there were data points that proved impossible to measure accurately indoors – specifically spin.

“If you can't measure the spin, all you have is ball speed and launch angle, and you can provide a predictive model, but it's not accurate enough to hold a tournament on, it's not accurate enough to do ball fitting, it's not accurate enough to do club fitting,” said Matt Hogge, Titleist, Senior Director, Golf Ball Engineering & Technology. “You need the spin value.”

The Titleist R&D team, in collaboration with a team of TrackMan experts, looked to create a golf ball design that could allow for accurate and reliable data capture in a way that was convenient for the indoor golfer. The result was Titleist Radar Capture Technology, an innovation that offers dedicated golfers, fitters and instructors tremendous benefit by producing accurate golf shot data.

“That's what's so inspiring about what our R&D team does every day, is they take on the impossible,” said Jeremy Stone, Senior Vice President, Titleist Golf Ball Marketing. “Every innovation creates opportunity for a new product and a new future.”

MORE ON TITLEIST RCT

Titleist Pro V1, Pro V1x and Pro V1x Left Dash golf balls with Radar Capture Technology (RCT) – developed by Titleist Golf Ball R&D engineers and validated in collaboration with a team of TrackMan experts – are designed to enhance the data capture of launch conditions in an indoor environment and deliver the most accurate information possible.

Pro V1, Pro V1x and Pro V1x Left Dash RCT golf balls improve the TrackMan experience for dedicated indoor fitting specialists committed to a premium, precision fitting; coaches and instructors aiming to give their players even better tools to work with; and Tour professionals and golfers seeking precision data capture from their indoor practice sessions.

The Titleist RCT models offer the same design, quality and performance as Pro V1, Pro V1x and Pro V1x Left Dash golf balls but with the enhanced benefit of indoor radar signal capture:

  • Pro V1, Pro V1x and Pro V1x RCT do not require application of reflective spin markers or precision orientation, benefitting indoor-only and seasonal golf facilities that operate a TrackMan simulator and enhancing the golfer experience.
  • Testing of Pro V1, Pro V1x and Pro V1x RCT models shows a 99 percent signal capture that delivers true spin, resulting in even more accurate carry and total distance calculations.
  • Spin is critical to deliver an accurate data set indoors, contributing to key data points such as peak height, angle of descent, carry distance, roll out and overall distance.
  • RCT has enabled TrackMan to improve the spin detection algorithm, requiring less ball flight to measure spin rate, benefiting, in particular, high ball speed/low spin rate scenarios.
  • Pro V1 RCT ball models conform with USGA and R&A rules.
